3 basic Korean plates

Korean food!

Restaurants specialize in about 1-5 main plates but they have a million side dishes, called banchan (반찬) that are all you can eat. Most plates are shared, and taking food off of someone else's plate is normal. If you cannot use chopsticks, you should bring your own fork and knife because they won’t have them at the restaurants. And to be able to fend for yourself, because it is communal eating, you should get good at using chopsticks other wise you won’t get food.

The only vegetables we could find were fermented and the older they are the more they cost. It is traditional to eat a lot of different types of seafood raw, but most of the younger generation don't.

Bidolsot bimbab (비돌솥 빔밥) - Traditional food brought out on a big wooden board that is just pushed onto the top of the table. It has a little bit of everything to try, but the best thing is the rice in the stone bowls. You pour broth onto the rice to have an amazing soup.

Naengmyeon (냉면) - Cold thin noodles made from (depending on where you are) buckwheat with potato starch. They are very popular in the summer when it gets up to 40C (104F) with 90% humidity.

Jeon (전) - Koreans call this ‘Korean pizza", but I think of it more like a savory pancake. You can put pretty much anything inside and it is fantasist!
