Italian Food Rules
Italian food is revered after all over the world. However, most people don’t know how streaked Italians are about how to eat/prepare food. Here are just a couple of rules you should follow to not get kicked out of the country (jokes).
Common mistakes made while making pasta
- Putting the pasta in before the water has boiled. This is a major no-no. Always wait until the water is really boiling.
- Breaking the pasta in half so that it fits into the pot. Never do this! Put the pasta in as a whole.
- Boiling the water with oil in it. Oil is for after it is cooked and should be high quality.
- Spaghetti and meatballs are not Italian so don’t expect to find them in restaurants.
- Cooking the pasta until it sticks to the roof. Italians eat their pasta al dente and you are expected to as well.
Coffee
- Cappuccinos are for the morning before about 11:00. Ordering them in the evening or afternoon is wrong and will label you as a tourist.
- After dinner, people drink espresso as a digestive.
- Bars = cafés. You can get alcohol as well but it is mainly for coffee. You stand at the bar as drink your espresso then leave.
Pizza
- Never put pineapple on the pizza.
- However, French fries and hot dog are commonly used as toppings…
- You eat pizza with a fork and knife until you can pick up the piece without everything falling off. (Not everyone eats like this)
- You eat a whole pizza yourself and if you don’t waiters will question you.
- If you leave the crust, it means the dough is bad. Each pizzeria has a secret recipe for the dough. Tip: If you can't finish a whole pizza on your own don't eat the crust.
