Sawmill, California

01 what to do

02 what to bring

03 how to get there

A great place for all outdoor activities. A road runs along side several different lakes so you can take many stops on the way to Sawmill. It isn’t always the easiest road to drive as it is small and can be steep will other cars pass going the other way. Well worth the ‘trouble’. The lakes are beautiful and depending on what time of the year you could be alone there.

01 WHAT TO DO

WATERFALL

Across the lake, the waterfall isn’t visible. The falls aren’t impressive in size, but they make up for it with a chain of small falls leading to swimming pools. There are four swimming areas, and the biggest one is right before the waterfall. From the pools, there is a beautiful view of the lake.

Getting to the falls - Looking across the lake to the right there is a dam. Going barefoot is the best way to crossing this is without slipping because the water will be passing over the wall. Once on the other side hike to the left. Try to stay as high as possible so that you arrive at the pools not at the bottom of the waterfall. There is a bit of a path, but it leads to the base of the falls.

CANOEING

Very calm and beautiful place to go canoeing. It is also a lot easier to get to the falls by boat.

02 WHAT TO BRING

  • Swimsuit

  • Hiking shoes that can get wet

  • Extra socks

  • Maybe some sort of walking stick to cross the dam

03 HOW TO GET THERE

You will need a car with 4x4 to get to the lakes. If you are a nervous driver, this isn’t for you. There are steep hills with little traction and small roads with cliff sides. It is a two-way street so it can be quite difficult when you encounter another car.
